Your Teacher

Native Bostonian & former NH resident and recent Portlander Adam Groppman spent many years in Los Angeles, where he graduated from the famed Second City Conservatory LA, where he studied with some of the best improvisers/teachers from the powerhouse Chicago, Detroit and Canadian Second City locations.

He also studied at LA's Bang! Comedy Theater and at San Francisco's Bay Area Theater Sports (BATS).

Adam has acted in several national TV commercials and a few independent films, and recently shot a film scene with Bob Odenkirk, Danny Huston and Radha Mitchell.

He also does standup comedy and is known for his honest, thought-provoking, relatable conversational style. Adam has taught improv to adults and teenagers in Southern California and looks forward to bringing his enthusiasm for the craft to Maine

Our Approach to Improv

Improvisational acting should never be a chore. It doesn't matter if you're aiming to be the next Kristen Wiig; a more effective employee or leader; or a happier, more actualized person. Improv should be really fun.

In improv, you engage in spontaneous teamwork and train your mind to let your naturally strong instincts and life experience take over. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's poignant, sometimes you'll want to write down an amazing thing that just happened.

We will cover shorter, foundational games and exercises and work into various length scenes, which are the building blocks of theater & drama.

After our last class, we will have a Grad Improv Show at a local area venue where our improvisers can invite friends & family and get up "on the stage", performing some of their strongest scenes for an audience.

Adam works to learn, modify, adapt and invent new improvisational exercises and scene variations for the classes, so that the experience is always evolving and responding to the students and the best new information.

Recently we were lucky to have acclaimed film & TV actor Xander Berkeley come to one of our sessions and act as guest teacher, taking the class through some powerful and deeply character-connected exercises. We have also enjoyed having some of Portland's best professional improvisers- members of the tremendous Yes & Co.- join us at play in our live grad shows. Adam will keep on looking for expansive, collaborative opportunities with other members of Portland's creative/performing arts community.

At Get Up & Go, Adam & co. are happy to be bringing dynamic improv training to Portland Maine. We aim to make it the most fun part of your week!
